Grammar hook - the letter ё is always stressed

The word свёкла (beetroot) is pronounced svYOkla, not sveklA. Mispronouncing it is a famous shibboleth - Russians will instantly know you're not a native speaker.

The rule behind it: ё is always stressed in Russian. Always. The problem is that in most printed text, ё is written as plain е - so you have to know it's ё. Words like ещё (yeshchYO), её (yeYO), and зелёный (zelYOny) all follow this rule.

When you see a word and aren't sure where the stress falls, check if any е might secretly be ё. If it is, that's your stressed syllable - guaranteed.

Cultural context

Картошка is the "второй хлеб" (second bread). Potato is the true staple of Russian cuisine. Boiled, fried, mashed, baked, in soups, in salads - it appears at nearly every meal. The phrase "второй хлеб" reflects just how central it is to Russian eating.

Огурцы (cucumbers) are a national obsession. Russians pickle cucumbers in massive quantities every autumn. Малосольные огурцы (lightly salted cucumbers) are a summer staple, and солёные огурцы (pickled cucumbers) accompany everything from vodka to New Year's оливье salad.

Свёкла makes борщ. Beetroot is the defining ingredient of борщ - without it, you just have vegetable soup. Every family has a borshch recipe, and arguments about the "right" way to make it are a genuine cultural pastime.
