Я скучаю по тебе
Ya skuchayu po tebe
/ja skʊˈtɕajʊ pə tʲɪˈbʲe/
I miss you (lit. "I long for you")

Missing in Russian = longing toward

English says "I miss you" - something is absent. Russian says Я скучаю по тебе - "I long toward you." The preposition по creates a sense of reaching, of direction. You're not just noting someone's absence; you're reaching toward them emotionally.

In texting, the short version - just Скучаю - is the norm between partners. The "по тебе" is implied. A text that says only Скучаю is tender and intimate, not incomplete.

The formal version: Я скучаю по вам - for someone you address as вы. Less common (you don't usually tell formal acquaintances you miss them), but it exists for respectful contexts - a grandchild to grandparents, for instance.

Grammar hook

Скучать по + dative case is the standard construction: по тебе (after you, dative of ты), по вам (after you, dative of вы), по маме (after mom), по дому (after home). This по + dative pattern is how Russian expresses missing anything: Скучаю по дому (I miss home), Скучаю по России (I miss Russia). One construction, unlimited objects of longing.

Cultural context

Тоска is untranslatable. Тоскую по тебе isn't just "I miss you more." Тоска is a uniquely Russian emotion - a blend of melancholy, longing, and existential sadness that has no direct English equivalent. It's what Chekhov's characters feel. It's what emigrants feel for Russia. Using тоскую instead of скучаю signals a depth of feeling that's literary and serious.

Скучаю texts are relationship currency. In Russian relationships, regular "скучаю" texts are expected and valued. Not sending them when you're apart can be noticed. It's not clingy - it's the Russian baseline for showing you care. A simple "Скучаю" message is the emotional equivalent of "thinking of you."

You can miss things, not just people. Скучаю по дому (I miss home), Скучаю по лету (I miss summer), Скучаю по маминым пирожкам (I miss mom's pies). The construction works for any absent thing you long for.
