Откуда вы? - three syllables, one of the first questions any Russian will ask you. Here's how to answer with your country, city, and the genitive case that makes it work.
Откуда вы? literally means "from where you?" Russian drops the verb "are" in present-tense questions - there's no equivalent of "are" here. Just "from-where you?"
To answer: Я из... (I'm from...) + your country or city in the genitive case. Я из Америки (I'm from America). Я из Лондона (I'm from London). Я из Берлина (I'm from Berlin).
The informal version: Откуда ты? - for people you'd address as ты (peers, friends, children).
The preposition из (from) triggers the genitive case. Country names change: Америка → из Америки, Англия → из Англии, Франция → из Франции. City names too: Москва → из Москвы, Лондон → из Лондона. The genitive ending depends on the word's gender and declension pattern. This из + genitive construction is one of the most frequent in Russian - it marks origin, source, and material.
Country in nominative → with из + genitive.
| Country | Pronunciation | "I'm from..." |
|---|---|---|
| Америка | Amerika | Я из Америки (Ya iz Ameriki). Also: Я из США (Ya iz Se-Sha-A) - from the USA. |
| Англия | Angliya | Я из Англии (Ya iz Anglii). For the UK: Великобритания → из Великобритании. |
| Канада | Kanada | Я из Канады (Ya iz Kanady). |
| Австралия | Avstraliya | Я из Австралии (Ya iz Avstralii). |
| Германия | Germaniya | Я из Германии (Ya iz Germanii). |
| Франция | Frantsiya | Я из Франции (Ya iz Frantsii). |
| Нидерланды | Niderlandy | Я из Нидерландов (Ya iz Niderlandov). Plural noun → genitive plural. |
Russians are genuinely curious. "Where are you from?" is one of the first things Russians ask foreigners - and they actually care about the answer. It's not small talk; it's establishing context for the conversation. Your origin shapes how they relate to you, what references they make, and what questions follow.
Americans: say your state or city, not just "America." "I'm from America" is too vague for Russian curiosity. Follow up with your city or state: Я из Нью-Йорка, Я из Калифорнии, Я из Техаса. Russians know US geography better than you might expect - Hollywood, NBA, and tech have done their work.
Откуда вы? can also mean "where did you come from just now." If someone asks Откуда вы? and you just arrived somewhere, they might mean "where did you come from [on your trip]?" not "what country are you from?" Context usually makes this clear. If unsure, answer with your country - they'll redirect if they meant something else.
